half of britons spurn smalltalk with strangers

According to the Guardian (01 June p. 12), more than two thirds of people don’t take part in any “community activity” and over half say they “would never even pass the time of day with a stranger in a local shop”.

The research, published yesterday by the Royal Society for Arts, calls this “community detachment syndrome”. I call it asking a question which, if answered with anything other than a resounding no, makes the respondent sound like that staring nutter on the tube who completely creeps you out by just looking like he might say hello.
