Yesterday I made my first post over on the Pods and Blogs. It’s a whirlwind tour of the perception of online community as a concept, and development of the online community management industry, from 1993 to today. Here’s a quick outline of key events:
- 1993: Howard Rheingold coins term "virtual community"
- 1998: HomeNet Study ("Internet makes users depressed, lonely")
- 2000: ClueTrain Manifesto / e-mint founded
- 2004ish: Move towards blogging
- 2005: Social networking sites and blogging constantly in the news; big media and internet brands buy into social networking and web 2.0 companies; year of the "citizen journalist"
