now everyone can go public in their niche

I was reading a free issue of O’Reilly’s Make magazine that I got at the BBC Backstage Christmas party and came across this gem of a quote that I’m probably going to use at every blogging talk I give over the next few months…

Glenn Davis, the guy who founded Cool Site of the Day, once told Danny [O’Brien] what he thought made the net great. He said, “Suppose there’s this young kid in Podunk, Conneticut. He runs a site about a niche, weaving wicker baskets, orwhat have you. In another age, that kid would probably have toiled in obscurity, but now he can discover that he is the best wicker-weaver or nude piano-tuner in the world. And he learns, as the rest of the world learns, through his website.”

So to is the beauty of blogging – someone might only have an audience of three, but it’s a highly engaged, devoted audience.

[Update – Wed. 17 Jan: I used my new MicroMemo to record this post into my 5G ipod, synched with iTunes and uploaded it here for a demo I’m giving today at MusicManifesto, an educational conference at London’s Roundhouse. More on that later as we’re going to be starting a blog during my 45 minute stint.]

  1. I’ve been pondering buying a micromemo ever since Rob Andrews showed me one in Paris. The recording quality of your piece, which I just listened to, is absolutely fine for my purposes. So… I just bought one :) Cheers.

  2. Hi Graham. I think they’re great. I noticed whilst in America that there are a few other similar products available but went with this one because my BBC Radio friends tell me that this one can make broadcast quality recordings if used with the proper mic (plugged into the line in).
I recorded that piece this morning in a hurry and had it online a few seconds later – that’s cool.

  3. Yes. I picked up on this comment too and made a mental note,
“Regardless of which mic you use, you can record 16-bit audio up to 44Khz—good enough to broadcast on any radio station or online podcast. I’m predicting now this will be a hot product for radio stations throughout the world and you’ll see radio/podcast reporters flocking to use it.”
