facebook lets content providers reach in and share

Facebook, the #2 social networking website in the US, has announced a new product called “share“. The feature allows facebook users, predominately American university students, to collect content from partner websites and publish it on their profile pages. Initial partners include:

  • News: New York Times, WashingtonPost.com, Wall Street Journal Online
  • Gaming:GameSpot.com and IDG Entertainment
  • Sports: SI.com and NBCSports.com
  • Entertainment: PhotoBucket, StupidVideos.com and The Onion
  • Potential partners simply drop some lines of code into their pages which enables facebook members to save and share that page’s content.

It’s not just a matter of free content for facebook users, it’s also a great way for brands to extend their reach into facebook and reach new audiences. Yep, it’s that whole share to reach new audiences thing I’m always banging on about… you’ve got to get your content out to where your audiences are.
